Overview

In clinical studies, the most common adverse reactions associated with teriparatide treatment include arthralgia, pain, and nausea.1

Adverse events reported since market introduction that were temporally related to teriparatide therapy include the following

  • allergic reactions:  anaphylactic reactions, drug hypersensitivity, angioedema, urticaria
  • investigations: hyperuricemia
  • respiratory system: acute dyspnea, chest pain
  • musculoskeletal: muscle spasms of the leg or back
  • other: injection site reactions including injection site pain, swelling and bruising; oro-facial edema.1

Orthostatic Hypotension With Teriparatide Therapy

Teriparatide may cause transient orthostatic hypotension.1

Typically in clinical studies, transient orthostatic hypotension began within 4 hours of dosing and spontaneously resolved within a few minutes to a few hours. When an event occurred, it happened within the first several doses and was relieved by placing patients in a reclining position.1

Teriparatide should be administered initially under circumstances in which the patient can sit or lie down if symptoms of orthostatic hypotension occur.1

Serum Calcium Elevation With Teriparatide Therapy

Teriparatide may cause slight and transient increases in serum calcium. Maximum concentrations are observed at approximately 4 to 6 hours postdose and returns to baseline by 16 to 24 hours postdose.1

Therefore, if blood samples for serum calcium are taken, it should be done at least 16 hours after the most recent teriparatide injection.2
